Gals & dudes
If auditioning for a musical, do your research and find out what style the musical was set in then duplicate it by visiting Op Shops and second hand stores. You will be amazed what you can find and how little it will cost you. I remember a girl who was laughed at by all her peers because she attended a Grease Musical Call wearing a full circle tulle skirt, blouse and hair and makeup in that era. She got the job, everyone stopped laughing!

6 working professional dancers from the commercial, musical theatre and corporate fields give fantastic advice to make the most out of your next audition.

Getting the mental edge in competition

Everyone knows that the best dancer does not always get selected in competition. Some of the most brilliant dancers struggle to perform at their peak in competitive environments costing them roles and causing frustration. So once you have developed the physical side of your performance, the key to success could lie in your mental preparedness and approach to competition. The majority of dancers who regularly under-perform in stressful situations struggle to control their anxiety and focus.

Musicality

Have you ever thought about what gives one dancer the competitive edge over another? What makes us watch one particular member of an ensemble? Or really be captivated by a performance? Is it just technique that makes us admire a dancer’s work or is it something more?

I have always defined a dancer as an actor who uses movement to tell a story, just as a singer is an actor who uses music/lyrics to tell their story. But what does that actually mean?
