Victorian State Ballet
The Snow Queen
14-16 April | The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood Sydney.
Based on the well-known classic fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen, The Snow Queen is a heart-warming story of the young Gerda, played by Elise Jacques (Senior Artist) and her struggle against an evil and icy foe, The Snow Queen, played by Elise May Watson-Lord (Principal Artist). Kai, Gerda’s love interest was performed by Benjamin Harris (Corps de Ballet) and Snow King and Troll roles were danced expertly by Tynan Wood.
Jacques and Harris make a lovely couple on stage, presenting beautiful artistry and matching lines and easily transporting us to a place where young love blossoms. Wood’s, a Principal Artist, impressed the audience with his gravity defying leaps, majestic grace and stage presence. The company is extensive this season, with over 50 dancers taking to the stage, which made for a dynamic and full production. Michelle Cassar de Sierra’s choreography was complex and passionate and she proved that she can easily and expertly create with these larger numbers, with gorgeous motifs and dazzling layered steps that manoeuvred the dancers in and around the stage. It was really a very special production.
Joining the Company this year were the dancers that made up the Youth Company. These dancers auditioned on Saturday, March 4 in Sydney and were cast from some of our top training institutions including; Tanya Pearson Academy, The McDonald College, National College of Dance, Andrea Rowsell Academy of Dance, The Academy, Ablaze Dance Centre, Danceworks Sydney, Valerie Jenkins Academy of Ballet, Julie Kemp’s School of Dance and Northbridge Dance Studios. The youth company comprised of students from age 10 to 17 years, each showing excellent ballet technique and artistry with stand-outs; Ella Marshall from The Academy, Isabella Crebert from Ablaze Dance Academy and their respective pas de deux partners, Conor Parkinson-Brown from Tanya Pearson Academy and Asher Katrakis-Owen from Danceworks Sydney.
Before each of the three performances the Senior Youth Company were welcome to take class with the full company on stage. A wonderful experience, particularly for the boys as the senior male company dancers assisted and encouraged the youth male company dancers, helping them with feedback on how they might be able to better execute steps. It is this type of exchange of knowledge and support that is an absolute joy to witness and of deep value for both senior and junior artists.
In an industry that seems to thrive on competition, Victoria State Ballet with their Youth Company offering, gives our student dancers something different, an artistic and performance based experience, where all dancers are nurtured and encouraged. Bravo and congratulations to all!!!
