On the memorable Sunday of May 5th, a momentous gathering of nearly 80 aspiring ballet dancers, all vying for the illustrious Enrico Cecchetti Gold Medal for New South Wales in their age group, an event steeped in tradition and now in its 67th year. The air buzzed with anticipation, setting the stage for an unforgettable spectacle of talent and artistry.

Leading the panel of adjudicators were two luminaries of the ballet world: Cameron Holmes, a distinguished Soloist of the Australian Ballet and 2017 recipient of the prestigious Cecchetti International Competition (CICB) Senior Gold Medal and Audience Choice Award, and Jade Wood, a Senior Artist of The Australian Ballet, whose exceptional talent and dedication have propelled her to prominence within the dance community.

After beginning his training with his mother, Donna Holmes, Cameron completed his Cecchetti training during his full-time years under the guidance of Robyn Ross, the event’s coordinator and a respected Cecchetti Examiner. Now an esteemed adjudicator, Holmes embodies the enduring cycle of mentorship and growth that defines the ballet industry. His profound passion for dance education is evident as he effortlessly engages with students, providing invaluable insights and guidance.

“Clarity in the port de bras and the seamless energy between the arms and fingers are paramount. It’s about extending the fingers gracefully rather than tensing them, ensuring a fluidity that resonates throughout the body. This principle was evident in the majority of students we observed today. There’s a dynamic energy that flows from the legs through the feet, maintaining a continuous, unbroken line. It’s not just about lengthening; it’s about precision and intentionality. Distinguishing between rounded and straight arms is crucial, creating nuances in movement and expression.”

Joining Cameron at the adjudicators’ table was Jade Wood, whose journey from Queensland training to the hallowed halls of The Australian Ballet School exemplified the highest standards of excellence in dance. Her presence lent an air of authority and expertise to the proceedings, enriching the experience for both participants and spectators alike.

The day’s events unfolded with a series of performances by Pre-Junior and Junior participants, expertly guided by Robyn Ross through a repertoire of pre-learned exercises and captivating solos. Each performance was a testament to the students’ dedication and passion for their craft, eliciting expressions of joy and admiration from the audience.

In the words of Cameron Holmes, reflecting on the Pre-Junior Results: “I remember being up on stage at my first Cecchetti medals, I was absolutely terrified. So well done. It is very daunting, but it’s exciting as well, and you all performed really beautifully.”

Fellow adjudicator Jade Wood echoed his sentiments, commending the participants for their dedication and artistry: “Well done everyone. You danced so beautifully today and it was wonderful to see your gorgeous faces and your lovely, beautiful ballet technique.”

The Intermediate and Senior students were treated to a masterclass led by Serena Graham, a distinguished Corps de Ballet member with the Australian Ballet, whose graceful movements and expert instruction left an indelible impression on all in attendance. Serena’s inclusion of choreography from her own performances at the Sydney Opera House added a touch of glamour and excitement to the proceedings, inspiring the students to reach new heights of achievement.

Honourable Mentions and winners were celebrated across all categories, with each participant receiving recognition for their exceptional talent and dedication to their craft.

The day culminated in a heartfelt expression of gratitude from Robyn Ross to sponsors and volunteers whose generosity and support made the event possible.

As the final notes of the competition faded away, the students departed with memories to last a lifetime, their hearts filled with the joy of dance and the knowledge that they had truly given their all on the stage.
